I decided to take a walk/wade down in the Blue River this afternoon. With all the changes across the river, I keep feeling like I should be down there as much as possible before things start getting even more different. All the life I saw--from vivid purple and yellow wildflowers, to small fish darting everywhere and nipping my legs, to the clicking of insects like dragonflies and damselflies--makes me wonder what the future holds for it in this drastically changed environment. I encourage you to look through all these photos. Take a guess at which find surprised me the most!
The Blue River is home to over 25 species of freshwater mussels, which is more than on the entire continent of Europe!

I had trouble ID-ing these flowers for some reason. Any insights? I know I've seen it before.
My favorite find of the day!
I believe this is the first soft-shell turtle I have ever seen!
I believe this is a spiny softshell turtle, Apalone spinifera. Here's one of the sites that helped me draw this conclusion.
I believe this is a damselfly. I just love the bright colors of this kind contrasted with the black wings.
